Why are indie projects so depressing ?
Ok I know I will more than likely get a lot of heat for this topic but it is an honest question that has bothered me for a long time.
As I look at indie projects for inspiration and ideas I find that the majority of them take on topics that are either dull or focus on the worst we have to offer as humans. Believe me I understand having a "cause" and wanting to "better" our society by exposing the injustice in our world.
Today many of us have little free time and when I do use that time to be entertained I don't always want to be taught a lesson or worse become depressed. Yes, yes I know art is evoking a reaction but can't that be a little more uplifting and positive message ?

Maybe a lot of indie filmmakers feel like they have to cover serious topics like that or else they aren't doing "real" documentary?
NOT ME! :) The project I'm working on isn't like that at all. I mainly follow "geekumentaries" so they're usually not super-serious world changing topics to begin with. One thing I do take issue with in that genre though, is the strong tendency to slam "geeks." It really feels like the no-brainer lazy way out to me. Uber Goober, unfortunately, was quite guilty of this. TILT, while it covered a kind of sad situation, is a brilliantly done example of telling a story WITHOUT really villifying anybody. That's my preference.
